What to Expect at Your First Group Dance Class

As dance instructors, we understand that being a beginner in group dance class can be a little scary. You’re going to a dance studio for maybe the first time in your life, and you might be scared that you’ll be the only one there who doesn’t know what he or she is doing. Maybe you’re worried that you’ll look foolish in front of everybody else. It’s completely normal to feel nervous, and we’ve heard these sentiments from new students countless times over the years.

Relax. Everything is going to be fine, and we promise you’re going to have more fun than you ever thought possible.

The fact is our beginner’s group dance classes are designed for people who have no experience whatsoever. Even if you’ve never danced a single step in your entire life, we promise you’ll feel totally at ease once class gets going, and faster than you know it, you’ll be picking up some of the basics.

At the start of class, we all go over the basic steps together very slowly. We make sure to break everything down into an easy-to-understand format for beginners. As class progresses and we partner everybody off (Note: You don’t need to bring your own partner. You will be dancing with other students in the class, and we often have helpers who enjoy filling in when possible.), you’ll learn things like footwork, timing, leading/following, and other dancing basics. By the end of your first class, you will have learned a lot more than you thought you could have!

Here are some other key things you need to know about attending your first dance class at Dance Passion Studio.

  • Plan to arrive at your first class about 15 minutes early for registration.
  • You can pay online for your class with a credit card or debit card, or pay at the studio with cash or check.
  • Wear comfortable, modest clothing that allows you to move freely.
  • Wear comfortable, well-fitting shoes that won’t fall off (i.e. do not wear flip flops or sandals that don’t latch securely behind the heel) or stick to the floor (i.e. try to avoid wearing tennis shoes).
  • Our studio is located on the back side of the building. There’s a parking lot just in front of the doors, and for overflow parking, you can park on the front side of the building at 3300 Chimney Rock. Do not park across the street on Beverly Hills as they will tow your vehicle.
  • Be ready to have fun!

The last point is the most important one to remember. At the end of the day, we want everyone to have a great time. Taking a dance class is about so much more than just learning steps and techniques. It’s really about letting loose, trying something new, and having a whole lot of fun. There’s nothing we love more than seeing our students smiling, laughing, and having a great time during class.
